The Sierra Leone Medical Students’ Association brings fond memories whenever the moments one had as Medical Students are remembered. The association which was a forum (and still remains one I believe), where we all socialize, meet, learn and share our creative ideas. While there are tense moments of election upheavals, it never took away the unity we enjoyed as students but it rather helped in building a common resolve among every member lucky to be elected and also helped pushed every executive member to fashion out creative ways by which they can best deliver to the members. Working as a Medical Doctor now, the lessons learnt from the association reverberates in one’s everyday life and practice. Suffice to say, the excellent nurturing by SLEMSA helped in the formation of the Junior Doctors’ Association of Sierra Leone (a movement formed by founding fathers of SLEMSA) and JUDASIL has grown in leaps and bounds ever since. For some of us, SLEMSA has gone beyond an association which we served in, it has become a legacy for us. A legacy we hold so dear and will never shy away from contributing to its greatness. The opportunity to serve as a former Secretary General is one that I will forever cherish in my life. While there are still salient issues that rear their ugly heads every now and then, it doesn’t remove from the fact that the association has evolved and continues to grow.
SLEMSA-Sierra Leone is a student run unpaid organisation that represents Medical Students in Sierra Leone and a member of IFMSA. It runs a newsletter which comprises of articles from brilliant minds based on different topics or daily happenings in our society.
